What Is Zakat and How Is It Calculated?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam — a religious financial obligation that Muslims with a certain level of wealth must fulfil once a year. The basic rule: if your net zakatable assets reach the nisab threshold and a full Islamic year (hawl) has passed on that amount, you pay 2.5% of your net assets as zakat. This calculator helps you enter your assets by category and automatically calculates the zakat amount once you set the nisab threshold.

This tool is for informational purposes only and does not constitute religious advice. It is recommended to consult a trusted Islamic scholar or religious institution for your zakat calculation.

What Is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth one must possess for zakat to become obligatory. There are two different nisab standards:

  • Gold nisab: The TRY equivalent of 85 grams of 24-carat gold. At 2026 market prices, approximately 250,000–300,000 ₺.
  • Silver nisab: The TRY equivalent of 595 grams of silver. At current prices, approximately 20,000–30,000 ₺.

There are different scholarly opinions on which nisab to use; the silver nisab is lower and thus reaches more people in need. Enter the nisab threshold you have calculated based on current market prices in TRY.
