What Is a Fuel Consumption Calculator and Why Do You Need One?

Fuel consumption calculation finds the amount of fuel a vehicle uses to cover a given distance and its monetary equivalent. The standard unit is litres per 100 km (L/100km) — the lower the figure, the more efficient the vehicle.

Because fuel prices change frequently, you need real-time calculations with the current price to build a travel budget or compare two vehicles by cost. The tool works in three modes: distance + consumption → cost, amount paid + consumption → distance, amount paid + distance → consumption.

How to Use

Inputs

Inputs vary by mode. For travel cost you need distance (km), average consumption (L/100km) and price per litre. If you don't know consumption, you can calculate it backwards from the amount paid and the distance.

Formula and Logic

Fuel used = (Distance × Consumption) ÷ 100. Total cost = Fuel used × Price per litre. Cost per km = Total cost ÷ Distance. The other modes are derived by solving these three equations in reverse.

Example Scenario

A roughly 450 km trip from Istanbul to Ankara with a vehicle consuming 7 L/100km and a fuel price of 45 TL per litre:

ParameterValue
RouteIstanbul → Ankara (~450 km)
Average consumption7 L/100km
Price per litre45 TL
Fuel used31.5 litres
Total fuel cost1,417.50 TL
Cost per km3.15 TL

How to Interpret the Results

Total cost is the primary reference for pre-trip budgeting. Cost per km is a more useful metric for comparing different routes or vehicles — expressed as currency per km, lower is better.

Calculated values are estimates based on your inputs. Traffic, mountain passes, vehicle load and air conditioning can increase real consumption. Treat the results as a lower bound and leave roughly 10–15% margin.

Tips for Accurate Results

  • 01

Use the last 500–1,000 km average from your vehicle's onboard computer as the consumption figure; factory values can differ from real-world use.

  • 02

Enter the pump price on the day of calculation and keep weekly price changes in mind.

  • 03

For a return trip, double the distance or calculate each direction separately.

  • 04

When comparing vehicles, keep distance and price per litre fixed and change only the consumption value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the fuel used (litres) by the distance travelled (km) and multiply by 100. For example, if 31.5 litres are used over 450 km: 31.5 ÷ 450 × 100 = 7 L/100km. You can also work backwards from the amount paid and the price per litre.

The fuel consumption calculator estimates trip cost based on the distance, consumption and price per litre you enter. Actual costs may vary with traffic, road and driving conditions — treat the results as a reference.
