In Turkey, many employees effectively work more than 45 hours a week, yet face situations where overtime pay is underpaid or not paid at all. What Is Overtime?
Under Article 41 of Labour Law No. 4857, every hour worked beyond 45 hours per week counts as overtime and is paid at least at 150% of the normal hourly rate. The employee's prior written consent is required for overtime. A maximum of 270 hours of overtime per year is permitted.

- Total weekly working hours — total hours actually worked that week
Calculation Formula
Hourly gross rate = Monthly gross salary ÷ (45 × 4.3333)
Overtime hours = Weekly hours − 45
Overtime pay = Overtime hours × Hourly rate × 1.5
The multiplier 4.3333 is the average number of weeks in a month (52 weeks ÷ 12 months). This is the standard Labour Law calculation method.

How Should You Interpret the Results?
The calculator outputs hourly gross rate, overtime hours and gross overtime pay. This figure is the gross additional pay that should be reflected on your payslip. Compare it with the overtime item on your payslip; if there is a shortfall you can request an explanation from the payroll department. Bear in mind that approximately 28–32% in tax and SGK deductions will be applied to arrive at the net amount.
Key Considerations
- Overtime requires the employee's written consent; even if work is performed without consent, payment is still required, but the employer may additionally face a violation penalty.
- A 270-hour annual overtime limit must not be exceeded. The employee retains the right to file a complaint if the limit is breached.
- In lieu of overtime pay, 1.5 times paid time off may be agreed in writing; however, this time off must be taken within 6 months.
- There is no daily overtime limit; the weekly total of 45 hours is what matters. However, daily working time must not exceed 11 hours (except in exceptional circumstances).
