Find the Correct VAT Amount in Seconds

Calculate Invoice VAT in 3 Steps: Add, Remove & Find Base

When issuing invoices — "What will the VAT-inclusive price be?" — or receiving them — "What is the tax base of this amount?" — struggling with the math wastes time. VAT calculation (Value Added Tax calculation) is based on simple formulas, but small errors can make a big difference, especially in high-volume transactions. With this calculator you can complete VAT addition, VAT extraction and finding the tax base from a VAT amount with zero errors.

What Is a VAT Calculator and Why Do You Need One?

VAT is an indirect tax paid to the government at each transfer of a good or service. The seller collects VAT from the buyer, then pays it to the government. The most common pricing mistake is confusing the tax base with the VAT-inclusive amount.

For example, adding 20% VAT to a 1,000 ₺ tax base gives a 1,200 ₺ invoice. But if you have a 1,200 ₺ invoice and want to find the base, 1,200 × 0.20 = 240 ₺ is wrong — the correct calculation is 1,200 ÷ 1.20 = 1,000 ₺. This calculator handles all three cases with the correct formula.

How to Use It? Step by Step

Required Inputs

  • Operation type: Remove VAT, Add VAT or Find Base
  • VAT rate: 1%, 8%, 10%, 18%, 20% or a custom rate
  • Amount: depending on the operation — VAT-inclusive, VAT-exclusive or VAT amount

Formula & Calculation Logic

Three different formulas are applied for three different operations:

  • Add VAT (excl. → incl.): VAT = Base × Rate; Total = Base + VAT
  • Remove VAT (incl. → excl.): Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate); VAT = Total − Base
  • Find Base: Base = VAT Amount ÷ Rate; Total = Base + VAT

"Rate" is a decimal, not a percentage: 0.20 for 20%.

How Should You Interpret the Results?

The calculator returns three values: the VAT-exclusive amount (tax base), the VAT amount and the VAT-inclusive amount. When issuing an invoice you must enter the "tax base" and "VAT amount" fields separately; the VAT-inclusive total is the amount you collect.

The tax base you obtain from a VAT-inclusive amount is the taxable base you will report to your accountant. This figure must match the tax base field on your invoice. A few cents of rounding difference may arise from the calculation method; under tax legislation the VAT amount is rounded to the nearest cent.

Tips for Accurate Results

  • Select the correct operation type: If you have a VAT-inclusive invoice use the "Remove VAT" mode. Choosing the wrong mode calculates the base incorrectly.
  • Check the rate: 8% and 18% are specific to certain sectors. Selecting the wrong rate can lead to an invoice error and a penalty.
  • Round cents: If there are decimal outputs, round the VAT amount up or down to the nearest cent.
  • If using a custom rate: You can enter a decimal value in the "Other %" field; for example 18.5 is accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by (1 + VAT rate). For a VAT-inclusive amount of 1,200 ₺ at 20%: 1,200 ÷ 1.20 = 1,000 ₺ tax base. A common mistake is 1,200 × 0.20 = 240 ₺ — this is a percentage of the VAT-inclusive total, not the tax base, and gives the wrong result.
