Reading Time Calculator

Find estimated reading time from word count. Calculate silent reading and speech time for any text, book or presentation.

Calculations are based on average adult speed (238 WPM). Actual reading time varies by text, attention level and comprehension depth.

How Is Text Reading Time Calculated?

The basis of reading time calculation is straightforward: divide word count by words per minute (WPM). But which WPM value should you use? The answer depends on your reading purpose.

What Is Average Reading Speed (WPM)?

WPM (Words Per Minute) is the number of words read per minute. According to Brysbaert et al.'s 2019 meta-analysis covering 190 studies in 17 languages, the average adult reading speed is 238 WPM.

Reader TypeSpeed (WPM)1,000 Words
Slow150 WPM~6.7 min
Average Adult238 WPM~4.2 min
Fast300 WPM~3.3 min
Speed Reader450 WPM~2.2 min

Time (min) = Word Count ÷ WPM

Difference Between Silent Reading and Oral Reading (Speech)

~238 WPM

Silent Reading

Average adult speed

Processing text mentally at individual pace. Most efficient mode for comprehension.

~130–150 WPM

Oral Reading / Speech

Presentation / podcast pace

Physical speaking speed is much slower than silent reading. 130 WPM is the base for presentations.

Why Should You Know the Reading Time?

Reading time is a critical metric not just for personal planning but for content production and professional communication.

Planning Presentation, Meeting and Podcast Durations

For speeches that must fit a specific time slot, calculating word count in advance saves a lot of trouble:

DurationWord Count (130 WPM)Example Use
1 minute~130 wordsElevator pitch
5 minutes~650 wordsShort presentation
10 minutes~1,300 wordsTED-style talk
20 minutes~2,600 wordsMeeting presentation
45 minutes~5,850 wordsLecture / webinar

User Experience (SEO) Impact for Bloggers and Content Creators

The reading time label ("3 min read") is one of the most important factors users consider when deciding whether to consume content. Recommended lengths by audience:

Does Reading Speed Vary by Language?

Yes. Brysbaert's meta-analysis showed that reading speed varies significantly by language. English readers average 238 WPM, Japanese 193 WPM, Chinese 255 WPM, and German 260 WPM. There is no comprehensive meta-analysis for Turkish; however, due to its phonetic structure, reading speeds are close to English.

A language's 'word density' also matters: in agglutinative languages like Turkish, a single word can correspond to multi-word phrases in English. For this reason, WPM comparisons should always use texts in the same language.
