Working Out Trip Costs in Advance

The fuel consumption calculator works both ways: measure your car's liters per 100 km from refill and odometer data, or use a known consumption figure to work out a trip's total fuel cost. City consumption is typically 20-40 percent higher than highway consumption because of stop-and-go traffic, so measuring the two separately gives more accurate results.

The distance calculator works out the straight-line distance between two points from their coordinates. Road distance is usually 20-30 percent longer than straight-line distance; add that margin when budgeting fuel.

Before a long trip, check the current fuel price per liter and use your car's real consumption; this narrows the gap between the estimated and actual cost. Adding a 10 percent buffer for the return leg and detours is a practical habit.
