When you know the original price and discount rate, the formula to find the new price is: New Price = Original Price x (1 - Discount Rate / 100). For example, a 500 TRY item at 20% discount sells for 400 TRY. Conversely, to find the original price from a discounted price: Original Price = Discounted Price / (1 - rate/100).
Percentage Change: Increase and Decrease Rate
To express the change between two values as a percentage, use: Change (%) = (New Value - Old Value) / Old Value x 100. This formula is fundamental for analysing stock returns, inflation rates and sales growth. A positive result means an increase; negative means a decrease. For example, if a price rises from 100 to 130, the change is a 30% increase.
Using Percentages in VAT and Tax Calculations
The standard VAT rate in Turkey is twenty percent. To find the VAT-inclusive price from the VAT-exclusive price of a product, simply multiply by 1.20. Conversely, to find the VAT-exclusive amount from the VAT-inclusive price, divide by 1.20. Reduced rates such as one or ten percent apply to certain products and services; using the correct rate is critical for an accurate calculation.
How to Calculate Compound Percentage Change?
Adding together percentage changes applied consecutively over multiple periods is not the correct method. For example, if a value increases by fifty percent and then decreases by fifty percent, you do not return to the starting point; the result is twenty-five percent below. For correct calculation, the multipliers for each period must be multiplied together and then one subtracted to find the total percentage change. This method is critically important in finance and economics for compound growth calculations.
