How Is University GPA Calculated?
The core formula for GPA calculation is based on weighted average: each course score is first converted to a letter grade, then multiplied by the course's ECTS value. The sum of all products is divided by the total ECTS.
GPA = Σ(Letter Points × ECTS) ÷ Total ECTS
Letter Grade Equivalents on the 4.0 Scale (AA, BA, BB etc.)
| Grade | Score Range | GPA Value | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| AA | 90–100 | 4.0 | Excellent |
| BA | 85–89 | 3.5 | Very Good |
| BB | 80–84 | 3.0 | Good |
| CB | 75–79 | 2.5 | Above Average |
| CC | 70–74 | 2.0 | Average |
| DC | 65–69 | 1.5 | Below Average (Conditional) |
| DD | 60–64 | 1.0 | Poor (Conditional) |
| FD | 50–59 | 0.5 | Failing |
| FF | 0–49 | 0.0 | Failing |
Course Credit and ECTS Multiplication Logic
A good grade in a high-ECTS course has a much greater GPA impact than a low-ECTS course. This is why prioritisation matters: focusing on a 6-ECTS course yields far more than the same effort in a 2-ECTS course.
| Course | GPA Contribution |
|---|---|
| Mathematics (6 ECTS, 88 pts → BA = 3.5) | 6 × 3.5 = 21.0 |
| Physics (4 ECTS, 72 pts → CC = 2.0) | 4 × 2.0 = 8.0 |
| Chemistry (4 ECTS, 91 pts → AA = 4.0) | 4 × 4.0 = 16.0 |
| Total (14 ECTS) | 45.0 ÷ 14 = 3.21 GPA |
What Is the Difference Between CGPA and Semester GPA?
YGPA
Yearly/Semester GPA
- Covers only the courses of that semester
- Recalculated fresh each term
- Used for academic warning thresholds
- May be the basis for per-term scholarships
CGPA
Cumulative GPA
- Cumulative average across all semesters
- Graduation requirement is usually 2.0 CGPA
- Basis for dean's list / honours certificates
- Used in graduate and international applications

How Do Conditional Pass Grades (DC, DD) Affect the Average?
DC (1.5 points) and DD (1.0 points) are technically passing grades, but they contribute little to GANO. At some universities, when GANO falls below 2.0, these grades enter 'conditional pass' status: enrollment in related upper courses may be denied or the courses must be retaken for graduation. Conditional pass rules are strictly subject to university regulations.

What Is the Bell Curve (Relative Grading) System?
Relative grading (Norm-Referenced Assessment) means student grades are determined based on the class average and standard deviation. In this system, relative standing in the class matters more than the absolute score. For example, a student with 60 points may receive AA if the class average is 45, or CC if the average is 75. Many universities in Turkey apply relative grading; in this case, the calculator's absolute-score estimate may differ from your actual GPA.
