How Is the Ideal TV Height Determined?

There is no single right answer for TV mounting, but the scientific reference point is clear: the screen's centre should be at — or at most 5–10° below — seated eye level. This position keeps neck muscles relaxed and prevents fatigue during extended viewing sessions.

Recommended Mounting Height by Screen Size

The values below are calculated assuming a seated eye level of 105 cm. If your eye level differs, use the calculator above.

Golden Rule: Screen Centre at Eye Level (Ergonomics)

The rule ergonomists and ophthalmologists agree on is this: the screen centre should be no more than 15° above and no more than 5° below eye level. Outside this range, neck, shoulder and upper-back muscles remain under constant tension.

What to Watch Out for When Wall-Mounting a TV

Mounting safety and room conditions are just as critical as height. The wrong bracket choice or a mount unsuited to the wall type can damage both the TV and the user.

Bedroom vs Living Room Mounting Differences

🛋️ Living Room

  • Seated eye level ~100–110 cm
  • TV centre should be close to this height
  • Fixed or slight-tilt bracket is sufficient
  • Full-motion if side seating exists

🛏️ Bedroom

  • Lying down eye level ~60–75 cm
  • High mounting strains the neck
  • Tilt or full-motion bracket recommended
  • Sitting up in bed? Living room rule applies

Installation Above a Fireplace or High Cabinet

When a TV is mounted above a fireplace, the screen typically sits 140–180 cm from the floor — 30–70 cm above standard eye level. This causes serious neck fatigue during extended viewing. Additionally, fireplace heat can damage TV electronics — check the maximum operating temperature in the manufacturer's specifications.

If mounting above the fireplace is unavoidable, use an extending full-motion mount: the TV can both tilt downward and extend forward to approach eye level. Even so, this is not ideal — move to a different position if possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

At a standard seated eye level (~105 cm), a 55" TV should have its screen centre approximately 110 cm from the floor and its bottom edge at about 75 cm. For a 65" TV the centre is ~113 cm and the bottom edge ~72 cm. Enter your own eye level in the calculator above for the exact value.
