How Are Iftar and Suhoor Times Calculated?
Diyanet, MWL and ISNA Calculation Criteria
Imsakiye is built from prayer times calculated by astronomical formulas based on the solar angle below the horizon. Imsak (start of Fajr) is set when the sun reaches −18° to −19° below the horizon (Diyanet/MWL), or −15° (ISNA). Isha is set at −17° for Diyanet. Asr time depends on madhhab: Shafi uses 1x shadow ratio, Hanafi uses 2x. A small precaution buffer of 2 to 5 minutes is applied to most published imsakiye.
Effect of Latitude, Longitude and Solar Position
Imsakiye times shift significantly with geography. A 15-degree change in longitude moves prayer times by about one hour. Latitude affects fast length: cities further from the equator experience much longer fasts in summer (up to 18 to 20 hours in northern Europe) and shorter ones in winter. This calculator uses each city's exact coordinates automatically.
Meaning of Each Time in the Imsakiye
What Is Imsak (Suhoor End) and When Does It Begin?
Imsak marks the start of the fast and the moment suhoor must end. Astronomically, it corresponds to the sun being roughly 18 to 19 degrees below the horizon, also known as true dawn (Fajr-i Sadiq). In the Diyanet imsakiye, Imsak is shown 5 to 10 minutes before the Fajr adhan as a Hanafi precaution buffer.
Iftar Time (Maghrib) and Breaking the Fast
Iftar coincides with sunset (horizon at 0 degrees), and the Maghrib adhan announces this moment. Some imsakiye add a 2 to 3 minute precaution buffer after astronomical sunset. The sunnah is to break the fast with dates and water, followed by the Maghrib prayer.

What Is Temkin (Precaution Buffer) and Why Is It Used?
Temkin is a precaution buffer added to compensate for small astronomical errors, clock differences, and possible delays in hearing the adhan. Diyanet typically applies a 3 to 5 minute buffer to Imsak and a 2 to 3 minute buffer to Maghrib. Leaving enough margin during suhoor ensures the last bite ends before Imsak.
Time Changes for Travelers (Musafir)
In Islamic jurisprudence, a musafir (traveler) is someone traveling more than about 90 km. Fasting times are always based on the current location, not the city of departure. For air travel, most scholars recommend following the times of the destination city.
