What Are the Daily Prayer Times?
Fajr, Dhuhr and Asr Prayer Times
Fajr begins at true dawn (Fajr-i Sadiq, the start of Imsak) and may be prayed until sunrise. As the first prayer of the day, it is 4 rakats including sunnah and fard. Dhuhr starts when the sun has crossed the meridian and continues until Asr enters. It is 10 rakats in the Hanafi school: 4 sunnah, 4 fard, 2 sunnah. On Fridays, men perform Jumu'ah in place of Dhuhr. Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals twice its length according to the Hanafi school, or equal to its length according to the Shafi school, and continues until sunset.
Maghrib, Isha and Witr Prayer Times
Maghrib begins exactly at sunset and coincides with iftar in Ramadan. In the Hanafi school it lasts until the red afterglow on the horizon disappears, and in the Shafi school until the yellow twilight fades. Isha begins when the sun is 17 degrees below the horizon. The Hanafi school recommends praying it before midnight, after which it becomes disliked. Witr is a wajib (obligatory) prayer in the Hanafi school performed after Isha, consisting of one, three, or five rakats. It can be performed up until Imsak.
Jumu'ah and Eid Prayer Times
Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) begins right after the sun leaves its zenith, i.e. at the start of Dhuhr time, and can be prayed until Asr begins. The meridian crossing of the sun shifts daily with the seasons, so weekly Jumu'ah times drift forward or backward by a few minutes. Eid prayers (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha) are performed roughly 45 minutes after sunrise until about 20 minutes before zawal. Eid prayer is sunnah and is recommended in congregation. Check the local mosque schedule for the exact time.
How Are Prayer Times Calculated?
Diyanet, MWL, ISNA and Other Calculation Methods
Prayer times are computed from astronomical formulas based on the sun's angle below the horizon. Standard parameters are: Fajr at −18° to −19° for Diyanet/MWL, −15° for ISNA, and −19.5° for Egyptian General Authority. Isha at −17° (Diyanet), −17° (MWL), or −15° (ISNA). Maghrib at sunset (0°), Dhuhr at solar noon, and Asr based on shadow ratio (Shafi: shadow equals object length; Hanafi: shadow equals twice the object length). A small precaution buffer of 2 to 5 minutes is often added.
How Latitude, Longitude and Sun Position Affect Times
Prayer times depend strongly on geographic coordinates. A 15-degree shift in longitude corresponds to about one hour difference in solar time, so cities to the east have earlier sunrise and Fajr. Latitude affects how steeply the sun descends below the horizon, so cities further from the equator have longer or shorter day lengths depending on the season. This calculator uses the exact coordinates of the selected city automatically.
What Are Makruh (Disliked) Times for Prayer?
Sunrise, Solar Zenith (Zawal) and Sunset Windows
Islamic jurisprudence identifies three short windows tied to specific solar positions during which voluntary (nafl) prayer is strongly disliked (makruh tahrimi):
The window during which the sun is rising on the horizon. Voluntary (nafl) prayers are disliked (makruh tahrimi) during this time.
The brief moment when the sun is exactly at the meridian (its highest point). Applies every day except Friday.
The window as the sun approaches and crosses the horizon. After Asr is prayed, no other prayer is recommended in this period.
Why Is Prayer Disliked During These Times?
Classical fiqh sources explain that these disliked times exist to avoid coinciding with the worship hours of sun-worshipping communities. The prohibition applies only to voluntary prayers; obligatory (fard) prayers should not be deliberately delayed into a makruh window. Opinions vary regarding missed (qada) prayers, but in the Hanafi school, missed Fajr can be performed until sunrise, and other missed prayers any time outside the three disliked windows.
