Rising Sign Calculator
Enter your birth time and city to calculate your rising sign (Ascendant). The rising sign changes approximately every 2 hours.
What Are the Traits and Effects of the Rising Sign?
The rising sign carries the energy of the zodiac sign ascending on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. This energy is reflected outwardly in body language, facial expressions, speaking style and even clothing preferences. The first impression formed in the initial moments of meeting someone usually comes from their rising sign, not their sun sign.
Astrology is not a scientific discipline; this tool is for entertainment and personal exploration. The calculation is based on astronomical formulas; a deviation of ±1 sign may occur near critical sign boundaries.
What Is the Rising Sign (Ascendant)?
The rising sign is the zodiac sign that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. In astrology it is also known as the Ascendant and marks the beginning of the 1st House of a natal chart. Just as the sun sign represents your inner identity and the moon sign your emotional nature, the rising sign determines your outwardly projected personality and first impression.
How Is the Rising Sign Calculated?
Three key pieces of data are needed to calculate the rising sign: birth date, birth time and birth place. These three pieces of information are combined and the calculation is performed using astronomical methods.
1. Birth Date and Time
The date determines which zodiac sign the Sun is in. The time is the critical variable; because Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours, the sign on the eastern horizon changes roughly every 2 hours. For this reason, two Libras born at 06:00 AM and 08:00 PM can have completely different rising signs.
2. Birth Place (Latitude and Longitude)
The rising sign calculation depends on the geographic coordinates of the birth city. Near the poles some signs pass the horizon very quickly, while near the equator all signs spend roughly equal time there. Therefore two people born at the same time and date in different cities may have different rising signs.
3. Time Zone Conversion
The birth time you enter is local time. The tool uses the IANA time zone of the selected city to determine the historically correct UTC offset including daylight saving time (DST), and converts the local time to UTC. So for someone born in Germany in summer 1990 UTC+2 is applied automatically, and UTC+1 for winter births.
Example Calculation
For someone born in Istanbul at 08:45 on March 3, 1992: since Turkey is UTC+3, the system converts local 08:45 to UTC 05:45. The Local Sidereal Time for that moment is then calculated, and using Istanbul's latitude (41°N) the Ascendant longitude is found. The result of this calculation is Aquarius Rising.
Why Is Birth Time Required?
The rising sign is tied to Earth's rotation on its axis. Because Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours, the sign on the eastern horizon changes roughly every 2 hours. For this reason, finding your rising sign requires your birth date and city as well as your exact birth time down to the minute. A calculation without the time does not produce a reliable result.

How Should You Interpret the Results?
After learning your rising sign, evaluate it together with your sun and moon signs. The three together form the most fundamental triangle of your natal chart. For example, if you know yourself to be shy at heart but others consistently find you confident and sociable, it may be because your rising sign is an outgoing one. Tips for an Accurate Result
- Verify your birth time from your ID card or birth certificate; hospital records are the most reliable source.
- If you were born abroad, select your birth city from the list — the time zone and daylight saving time are applied automatically, no manual conversion needed.
- If the result appears near a sign boundary, a few minutes' difference may yield a different result; make sure your birth time is accurate to the minute.
- For a professional natal chart, astrology software (such as Astro.com) or consultation with an experienced astrologer is recommended.
