Rising Sign Calculator

Enter your birth date, time and city to calculate your rising sign (Ascendant). The rising sign changes about every 2 hours.

The rising sign changes roughly every 2 hours. Enter your birth time to the minute for an accurate result.

Astrology is not a scientific discipline; this tool is for entertainment. The calculation uses astronomical formulas; very close to a sign boundary, the result may be off by one sign.

What Is the Rising Sign (Ascendant)?

The rising sign is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. In astrology it is also known as the Ascendant or simply AC, and it marks the starting point of the 1st House of the natal chart.

In astrology, the sun sign stands for your inner identity and ego, and the rising sign for the personality you show, your social mask. How someone sees you at a first meeting, your body language and your instinctive reactions are largely linked to the rising sign. That is why two people with the same sun sign can leave very different impressions if their rising signs differ.

How Is the Rising Sign Calculated?

The rising sign needs three inputs: birth date, birth time and birth place. The tool runs them through astronomical formulas to find which sign was on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth.

Why Does Birth Time Matter?

Because Earth rotates 360° on its own axis in 24 hours, the sign on the eastern horizon changes roughly every 2 hours. So two people born on the same day, one at 06:00 and the other at 14:00, can have completely different rising signs even though they share the same sun sign. All 12 signs cross the horizon in a single day, and each stays in the "rising" position for about 2 hours on average.

The Effect of Birth Place (Latitude and Longitude)

The latitude and longitude of the birth place also affect the result. Near the poles, some signs cross the horizon very quickly (short ascension) while others take a long time to rise (long ascension). Near the equator, all signs spend roughly equal time rising. That is why two people born at the same time in Istanbul and Rome may have different rising signs. The tool applies the selected city's coordinates and time zone, including daylight saving time, automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

A reliable result needs the birth time, because the rising sign changes about every 2 hours. To find the time, check your hospital birth record or identity documents, or ask older family members. If you still can't find it, enter a few different times and compare which rising sign fits you best. An astrologer can also estimate the time with the 'rectification' method, working backwards from key life events.
