TV dimensions chart: screen width and height by TV size

TV dimensions chart with width and height for 32 to 98 inch 16:9 screens, the formula behind it, and how to check a TV against your wall or console.

A TV with its diagonal marked and a tape measure, illustrating TV dimensions

A TV's advertised size is the diagonal of its picture area, not its width. This TV dimensions chart turns each common diagonal from 32 to 98 inches into screen width and height for a standard 16:9 TV. A 55-inch screen, for example, is about 47.9 inches wide and 27.0 inches tall (121.8 × 68.5 cm).

These figures cover the screen only. The bezel, the bottom of the cabinet and the stand or feet all add to the footprint. Before you commit to a wall, a media console or a cabinet opening, check the exact model's spec sheet.

How TV screen sizes are measured

TV sizes are measured diagonally across the picture area, from one corner to the opposite corner, without the frame. To check a TV you already own, run a tape measure from the bottom-left corner of the visible picture to the top-right corner.

The number on the box is often a size class rather than the exact diagonal. Samsung's 2017 Q6F spec sheet, for example, lists a screen size class of 55" and a screen diagonal measurement of 54.6". The chart below uses the advertised size, so a set's real screen can be a few tenths of an inch smaller than its row suggests.

Metric figures in this article use the exact conversion of 1 inch = 2.54 cm. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) notes that the inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 mm since 1959.

Each row below was calculated from the advertised diagonal with the formula in the next section, assuming a 16:9 aspect ratio. Width and height describe the picture area, without the bezel or stand.

Every 10 inches of diagonal adds about 8.7 inches of width and 4.9 inches of height. Stepping up from a 55-inch to a 65-inch TV, for example, takes 8.7 more inches of wall width. The 77- and 83-inch sizes appear in LG's OLED range, and 98 inches is the largest size listed in Samsung's TV size guide.

The chart applies to 16:9 screens only, which covers most TVs sold today. An ultrawide 21:9 screen with the same diagonal is wider and shorter.

55-inch and 65-inch TVs next to real sets

These two sizes draw the most questions, so it helps to put the screen math next to a manufacturer's figures for the whole set.

55-inch TV dimensions

A 55-inch 16:9 screen is 47.9 × 27.0 inches (121.8 × 68.5 cm), with a diagonal of 139.7 cm. Samsung's TV dimensions guide lists its 55-inch sets at 48.5 × 27.88 × 2.4 inches (W × H × D). That puts the whole TV about 0.6 inch wider and 0.9 inch taller than the screen alone.

65-inch TV dimensions

A 65-inch 16:9 screen is 56.7 × 31.9 inches (143.9 × 80.9 cm), with a diagonal of 165.1 cm. The same Samsung guide lists its 65-inch sets at 57.2 × 32.9 × 2.4 inches, about 0.5 inch wider and 1.0 inch taller than the screen.

How to calculate TV width and height from the diagonal

A 16:9 screen is a right triangle whose sides are 16 and 9 units, so the diagonal is the hypotenuse: √(16² + 9²) = √337 ≈ 18.358 units. Dividing each side by that number gives two fixed factors:

A 55-inch TV's 139.7 cm diagonal, 121.8 cm width and 68.5 cm height with the 16:9 formula
  • Width = diagonal × 16 ÷ 18.358 ≈ diagonal × 0.8716
  • Height = diagonal × 9 ÷ 18.358 ≈ diagonal × 0.4903

For a 50-inch TV, width = 50 × 0.8716 = 43.6 inches and height = 50 × 0.4903 = 24.5 inches. The formula works in any unit. Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimeters, or divide centimeters by 2.54 for inches.

You can run the math in reverse when you start from a space. Dividing the available width by 0.8716 gives the largest diagonal whose screen would fit. A 55-inch-wide opening gives 55 ÷ 0.8716 = 63.1 inches. Because that figure ignores the bezel, a 58-inch set fits with room to spare and a 65-inch set does not. The TV size calculator returns width and height for any diagonal, and the length converter handles inch and centimeter conversions.

Screen size vs. the TV's actual footprint

A TV's size class tells you about the picture, not the space the set takes up. Bezels, the lower cabinet and the stand differ from model to model. The table compares the calculated 55-inch screen with two Samsung spec sheets: the 2017 US Q6F above and the 2018 Australian QA55Q8FN, whose millimeter figures are converted to inches.

MeasurementWidth (in)Height (in)Depth (in)
16:9 math, 55" screen47.927.0–
16:9 math, 54.6" screen47.626.8–
QN55Q6F without stand48.328.02.2
QN55Q6F with stand48.329.48.3
QA55Q8FN without stand48.527.82.3
QA55Q8FN with stand48.530.79.8

Two 55-inch models from the same brand differ by about 0.2 inch in width. Their stands add 1.4 to 2.9 inches of height and need 8 to 10 inches of depth. Both sets have slim bezels, so the gap between screen and body is small here. Other designs can differ more, which is why the chart is a first filter and the spec sheet is the final word.

Will the TV fit your wall or media console?

To compare your space with a specific model, work through these steps in the same unit:

  1. Measure the space. Note the width of the wall area or cabinet opening, the height between the console top and any shelf above it, and the console's depth.
  2. Find the model's dimensions "without stand" and "with stand" on its spec sheet. If you only know the size class, start from the chart. Then allow roughly an extra half inch to an inch of width and 1 to 1.5 inches of height, the range seen in Samsung's figures.
  3. If the TV will sit on furniture, use the "with stand" figures. The console must be at least as deep as the stand. If the TV uses feet near its edges, the surface also has to be wide enough to hold both feet.
  4. If you will mount it, use the "without stand" figures and set the screen height with the TV mount height calculator.

A TV that fits the space is not automatically the right size for where you sit. Our guide on what size TV to buy for your viewing distance covers that part of the decision.
