How Is a Salary Raise Calculated?
The raise amount is your current pay multiplied by the raise percentage. For example, an employee earning 30,000 who gets a 25% raise gains 7,500, so the new salary is 37,500. The effect on payroll depends on whether the agreement is based on gross or net salary.
How a Gross Salary Raise Affects Your Net Pay
If the raise is applied to your gross salary, your take-home pay is high at the start of the year. Because your gross is higher, though, your cumulative tax base fills up faster and you reach the upper brackets earlier. Your net salary then drops noticeably toward year-end.
What Happens When You Agree on a Net Salary Raise
An employee who agrees on a fixed net salary has more predictable pay. If your new pay is set at a net 40,000, tax bracket changes during the year raise the employer's cost (the gross), not yours. You take home the same amount every month.
Inflation Adjustment and Welfare Bonus Concepts
In high-inflation economies such as Turkey, raises are usually tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) published by the national statistics office. Pay for workers, civil servants and retirees is updated at set intervals by the inflation rate to keep purchasing power. Sometimes an extra welfare bonus is added on top so that real income grows rather than just holds steady.
Six-Month Inflation Adjustment for Civil Servants and Retirees
For civil servants and their retirees, the inflation adjustment is the portion of cumulative inflation in the first half (January to June) or second half (July to December) that exceeds the previously received collective bargaining raise. That excess percentage is then added to the next period's salary as an inflation adjustment.
Types of Salary Raises and Calculation Methods
There are two main types of raise: percentage-based and fixed-amount. A percentage raise adds a set rate to the current salary, so higher earners gain more. A fixed-amount raise gives everyone the same increase, which helps lower earners relatively more.
Real Raise: Above or Below Inflation?
The real raise rate shows whether a raise actually increases purchasing power: Real Raise = ((1 + Raise Rate) ÷ (1 + Inflation Rate) − 1) × 100. For example, an employee who gets a 40% raise when inflation is also 40% has a real raise of zero; purchasing power is unchanged.
