What Is Dimensional Weight (Desi) in Shipping and Why Is It Calculated?
In the logistics and transport sector, the load capacity of a vehicle (truck, plane) is limited not only by kilograms but also by internal volume. A very light but very large box can fill up the vehicle, causing losses for the company. To prevent this and ensure fair pricing, the 'volumetric weight' or dimensional weight system is used.
Dimensional Weight vs. Physical Weight (Kg)
Physical weight is the net kilogram (kg) value shown on a scale. Dimensional weight is the value mathematically calculated based on the box dimensions. When accepting a package, shipping companies look at both values and always use the higher of the two as the billing measure.
How Does the Dimensional Weight Formula Work?
Dimensional weight calculation is based on a standard formula determined by international and local transport regulations. The three basic dimensions of the cargo (length, width, height) are multiplied together and the resulting volume is divided by a fixed divisor determined by the transport mode (road, air) to arrive at the dimensional weight.
Domestic Cargo Dimensional Weight Divisor (3000)
The fixed divisor used in standard domestic road transport within Turkey is 3,000. The formula is: (Length × Width × Height) / 3,000. All measurements must be taken in centimetres (cm).
International and Air Cargo Dimensional Weight Divisor (5000 or 6000)
For packages sent internationally or via air freight, because space in an aircraft cargo hold is far more costly, the divisor is typically 5,000 (or 6,000 at some carriers) instead of 3,000. This calculation results in a higher dimensional weight compared to road transport.
Dimensional Weight — Step-by-Step Examples
The easiest way to understand dimensional weight is to work through real measurements step by step. Below are two concrete examples covering domestic and international shipping.
Domestic Shipping Example (Divisor 3,000)
Consider a parcel measuring 40 cm × 30 cm × 25 cm with an actual weight of 2 kg: Volume = 40 × 30 × 25 = 30,000 cm³. Dimensional weight = 30,000 / 3,000 = 10 desi. The carrier compares actual weight (2 kg) with dimensional weight (10) and charges the higher figure — 10 desi. Simply reducing the box height to 15 cm drops the dimensional weight to 6; that small change makes a significant cost difference.
International / Air Freight Example (Divisor 5,000)
When the same parcel is sent internationally via DHL: Dimensional weight = 30,000 / 5,000 = 6 desi. A larger divisor lowers the desi figure, yet air-freight unit rates are far higher than road freight. For small packages actual weight often governs; for large parcels dimensional weight dominates the cost.
3 Practical Tips to Reduce Your Dimensional Weight Costs
1. Choose a box sized to your product
A common mistake is grabbing the largest or most readily available box. Every extra centimetre pushes dimensional weight upward. Using the smallest box that comfortably fits your product cuts both packaging material and shipping costs directly.
2. Use void fill intelligently
Protective padding is essential for fragile items, but over-stuffing with bubble wrap or foam needlessly increases box size and weight. Form-fit foam inserts or crinkled paper fill that matches the product reduce both volume and unnecessary bulk.
3. Negotiate the divisor in carrier contracts
High-volume shippers can often negotiate their carrier contracts. Securing a divisor of 4,000 or 5,000 instead of 3,000 creates a meaningful cost advantage on large shipments. If you plan significant annual volume, specifically request divisor negotiation as a line item in contract talks.
