Distance Calculator

Easily calculate the driving and flight distance between two cities or addresses.

Why Distance Matters in Travel Planning

When planning an intercity trip, total travel time and cost often matter more than raw kilometres. A 400 km drive can stretch to 5–6 hours including traffic and breaks, while the same distance by air takes just one hour.

World's Most Famous Routes — Driving vs. Flight Distance

RouteDrivingFlight
New York – Los Angeles~4.500 km~3.950 km
London – Paris~460 km~340 km
Tokyo – Osaka~600 km~400 km
Sydney – Melbourne~900 km~710 km
Dubai – Abu Dhabi~150 km~120 km
Berlin – Munich~590 km~490 km
Madrid – Barcelona~620 km~500 km
Cairo – Alexandria~220 km~180 km
Mumbai – Delhi~1.400 km~1.150 km
São Paulo – Rio de Janeiro~430 km~360 km

Convert Distance to Fuel Cost

Once you know the distance, use our Fuel Consumption Calculator to find out how many litres you'll need and what the trip will cost. Enter the calculated distance and your vehicle's average consumption to get the total in seconds.

What Is the Haversine Formula?

The Haversine formula is the mathematical method used to calculate straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) distance. It accounts for Earth's spherical shape and returns the arc length between two coordinate points. Unlike measuring on a flat map, it produces accurate real-world results — especially important over long distances. The straight line between New York and London looks horizontal on a flat map, but in reality it arcs northward over the North Atlantic toward the pole.

How Is the Distance Between Two Locations Calculated?

The distance between two locations is calculated using GPS coordinates or address data. Driving distance follows the actual road network, bridges and routes; flight distance uses the Haversine formula to give the shortest straight-line distance between two points. Driving distance is always greater than or equal to the flight distance due to geographical obstacles.

How to Use the Distance Calculator?

Enter your starting point (city, district or address) in the "From" field. Type your destination in the "To" field. Select Driving or Flight mode and click "Calculate". Use the ↕ icon in the middle to swap the two locations. The result is displayed instantly in kilometres.

What Is the Difference Between Flight Distance and Driving Distance?

Flight distance (as the crow flies) is the geometric straight-line distance between two points; it ignores obstacles such as mountains, rivers or buildings. Driving distance always longer as it follows the actual road network, bridges and passes. For example, Istanbul–Ankara is approximately 350 km as the crow flies but around 450 km by road.
