This tool is for information only. Your text isn't stored on a server; everything runs in your browser.
This character counter measures the length of your text as you type. Use it to stay within the limits set by social media platforms, search engines and academic assignments. The totals appear as soon as you paste your text into the box.
Character Limits for SEO and Social Media
Each platform has its own limits. For Google search results, titles are usually kept under 60 characters and descriptions under 160. X (Twitter) caps posts at 280 characters, and LinkedIn and Instagram have their own limits too.
| Platform | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Twitter / X | 280 | URLs shorten to 23 chars, media not counted |
| Instagram Caption | 2,200 | First ~125 chars show before 'more' |
| LinkedIn Post | 3,000 | First 210 chars shown in preview |
| Meta Title (SEO) | 60 | ~600px width; 50-60 chars is ideal |
| Meta Description (SEO) | 160 | Google displays 150-160 characters |
| YouTube Title | 100 | ~70 chars visible in search results |
Character Count With and Without Spaces
Characters are counted two ways: the total including spaces, and the count without spaces, where only letters and numbers count. Academic papers and publishing usually go by the count without spaces, while technical platforms count spaces as characters.
Why Use an Online Character Counter?
Text editors such as Word give these counts too, but an online tool needs no installation. Paste your text in the browser and check it against the limits straight away. The tool also counts words automatically.
