Conversion rate (CR) is the core measure of how well a website or ad campaign works. It shows, as a percentage, how many visitors completed the goal you set (a purchase, a form submission, a sign-up and so on).
How Is Conversion Rate (CR) Calculated?
Example: if 20 of 1,000 visitors make a purchase, the conversion rate is (20 ÷ 1,000) × 100 = 2%.
Micro and Macro Conversions
Not every conversion is a sale. A macro conversion is usually a sale or subscription; watching a video, downloading a PDF or adding a product to the cart are micro conversions. Tracking both shows how well the funnel works.
How Do You Increase Conversion Rate? (CRO)
Conversion rate optimization (CRO) covers steps such as speeding up the site, using a clear call to action (CTA), improving user experience (UX) and adding social proof such as customer reviews. A small rise in CR can multiply revenue without a bigger ad budget.
What Affects Conversion Rate?
Traffic source alone can double or triple CR. A visitor from organic search or your email list already knows the brand and usually converts far better than cold traffic from a display ad. That's why blending channels into one average CR misleads; measure each channel separately.
Device type matters too: mobile traffic usually converts at a lower rate than desktop, because forms and checkout are harder on a small screen. Each extra second of load time can cut conversion rate by up to 7% depending on the industry, so check site speed before starting any CRO work.
Avoiding Common Mistakes When Reading CR
Trusting CR at low traffic is risky: 1 sale from 10 visitors gives a 10% CR, but that rests on one person's decision and has no statistical weight. As a rule of thumb, wait for at least a few hundred visitors and a few dozen conversions before drawing conclusions, or you may mistake random noise for a real trend.
Another common mistake is treating CR as one number. New and returning visitors usually convert at different rates, since returning visitors already know the brand. An unsegmented average hides which segment actually needs work.
